About The Authors..
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born in Hasse-Kassel, Germany to a large family of nine children. Jacob was born first on January 4th, 1785 and Wilhelm on February 24th, 1786. Their father was a lawyer and when they went off to school in Kassel, they intended to follow in his footsteps.
It was in law school that they gained an interest in their culture and folk stories, which inspired them to collect and write down the fairy tales they are known for today.
The Grimm brothers published their first volume of eighty-six stories in the year 1812. A second volume containing seventy stories was published in 1814 and shortly after they were recognized for their work by Marburg University with honorary doctorates. The stories had been a success.
During their later years the Grimm brothers worked on a German dictionary of thirty-two volumes together, but never lived to see the final edition published. Wilhelm died on December 16th, 1859 and Jacob Grimm on September 20th, 1863.
